OK, sorry cat lovers... but if you own a cat, there's probably been a day where he brought you a present from outside. And that present was a DEAD ANIMAL.
Well, according to a new study, cats are actually the SERIAL KILLERS of the animal world. They're out there, every day, stealthily killing EVERYTHING in sight.
Between wild cats and pet cats who are allowed to go outside, cats kill anywhere from 6.9 BILLION to 20.7 BILLION other animals every year... and that's JUST in the continental U.S.
Birds are the main victim of serial killing cats. Cats take out up to 3.7 BILLION birds a year in the U.S. Mice, shrews, rabbits, and voles are the next-most common targets.
There are anywhere from 114 million to 164 million wild and domestic cats in the U.S. Which means the average cat kills at least 42 animals a year. Of course, I'm sure your special guy kills zero . . . it's all the other cats killing WAY more.
The Smithsonian ran the study with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Their response to the findings? Quote, "Stunned."
