Here we are with Halloween one week from today!!! We all know things like candy and soda are bad for our teeth.... But there are also a bunch of less obvious things that can mess up your smile...
Here's a list from WebMD of five unexpected things to watch out for!
#1.) Cough Drops. Most of them are loaded with sugar, so it's basically like eating hard candy. And the bacteria in plaque ends up converting that sugar into an acid that eats away your enamel.
So if you're sick, and you take a cough drop before bed, you should brush your teeth again. The same goes for a lot of cough SYRUPS!
#2.) Constant Snacking. When you eat something with starch in it, like potato chips... the starch breaks down into acid just like sugar does, and that acid attacks your teeth for about 20 minutes afterward!
But it's even worse if you open a bag of chips and keep snacking on them all DAY, because it creates wave after wave of acid.
And constant snacking also reduces the amount of saliva in your mouth, which makes the whole process take even longer.
#3.) Tongue Piercings. You can crack a tooth pretty easily if you bite down on it by mistake. Plus, when the metal rubs against you gums, it can potentially cause damage, and make you more likely to lose teeth as you get older.
#4.) Chewing on Ice. If you get unlucky, you'll crack a tooth. And if it irritates the soft tissue INSIDE your teeth, it'll cause toothaches.
#5.) Drinking White Wine. RED wine can obviously stain your teeth. But white wine isn't good for them either, because the sugar weakens your enamel, which makes your teeth more likely to be stained by OTHER things, like coffee.
So in other words, white wine is BETTER for your teeth than red. It's just definitely not GOOD for them.
But after you have a glass of EITHER, drinking a little water and swishing with it can help.
