From The Mailbag
Monday 11-15-2010 1:26pm CT

It's that time! Time to dip into the mailbag and answer listeners questions. Lately I have gotten so many questions regarding running. An abundance of the questions were how do I train? And what training schedule/plan do I use. The honest truth is, I use my own. While I appreciate all the plans that are out there, I find them to  be too taxing on me. But, that is just me, and everyone is different. If you run a 5 minute mile, then you can do a ny of the training schedules that are out there...and you most likely don't need one. But, I have to train very methodically and deliberate...I do because of my asthma. Every day is different and I have exercise induced asthma which can be tricky. If it's a really cold day, I struggle and my time per minute goes up. I usually run between a 10 and 12 minute mile. Sometimes, not very often, faster, though not intentionally, if I feel good it shows through. I listen to my body and never ever push a run, that is when you could get injured, and that goes for all sports. If I better my time by 15 minutes...woo hoo! But, even if it's only 3 minutes, it's still an accomplishment and I am happy with it...woo hoo! So, my answer is look at the training schedules that are out there, they will be very helpful in setting up what you want to accomplish. Start slow and enjoy watching and tracking your progress and most of all know you've done it safely. Run happily!  :-)

Mr. Peanut Gets A Makeover
Wednesday 11-10-2010 9:28am CT
If there is one mascot I have always loved, it's Mr. Peanut. I never really thought about updating his appearance, I've always thought he was dapper...I mean for a peanut. Then I recently read that he is getting a makeover! I mean are you kidding me? Mr. Peanut is an Icon! But, apparently the Planters folks feel he needs an update. So, he is being given a voice. Really? Yeah, and I guess if anyone can voice Mr. Peanut it's got to be the ultra-hip, Robert Downey Jr.! I find that cool. However, it seems that he is also getting a sidekick. And here is where I ask, "Why?" And, get this, the sidekick's name is, Benson. Come on, didn't he already have his own show? And what is the sidekick, a cashew? And I wonder who will be the voice of said sidekick. What else is in store for the Iconic Peanut...I can only wonder will they make him lose the monical in favor of prescription Raybans? Will he have to trade in his spats for mens Uggs and the tophat for a fedora? And what about the cane and the gloves? It's always been in his hand, though I never saw him walk with it. And does he have Nutter Butters for hands? Will he be forced to leave the cane in his can of peanuts or replace it with an updated walking stick? Seriously, I think the classy Mr. Peanut is just that classy as he is. But then, if they go through this whole update process, will they be less formal too and not call him Mr. Peanut, but call him by his first name? And for Pete's sake, what is his first name? Hmmm. Perhaps it is, Peter.  :-)
Definitely A Hot Chocolate Day!
Saturday 11-06-2010 3:12pm CT
This morning 30,000 runners assembled in Grant Park in downtown Chicago for the Hot Chocolate 15k/5k Run! The smell of chocolate was definitely in the air, the sun was rising...and it was COLD! Dan and I ran wth our friends Tom and Cherri who are amazing runners, yes, I was last, but I think I did very well considering I have asthma and this is not good weather for me to run in. But, I did not need to use my inhaler today so, that alone made it a very good day and a good run for me. After we ran we got hot chocolate...I just held the cup simply for the warmth, I'm allergic to chocolate so none of the famous Ghirardelli squares were consumed by me...however, it was such a fun event, I highly recommend it! And it was so great to see families running together and having a blast! This event proved to me that fun and fitness can definitely go together!  :-)
